Diocese of Shanghai

Only three Chinese Orthodox clergy from Shanghai are still alive today, but are all advanced in age. One who is overseas is mitred archpriest Michael Li who immigrated to Australia in 2000. Another priest Michael Wang and protodeacon Evangelos Lu still reside in Shanghai. Being wounded by the persecutions of the Cultural Revolution, they have been for a long time withdrawn from active service with the closing of the Shanghai Diocese. Recently, the two in Shanghai have resumed with the permission of the local civil authorities in taking on more active service during major feast days.

In August 2003, entertainment businesses in two former Orthodox church buildings were to be evicted from the premise after securing assurance from the Chinese Ambassador to Russia and are now emptied.

Currently, Fr Alexy Kiselevich celebrates the Divine Services for the Russian Orthodox community at the premises of the Consulate General of the Russian Federation. The Antimins was consecrated in honor of Mother of God, the same name as former Cathedral in Shanghai.
