Biography

Nikolai (Adoratsky Peter Stepanovich), Bishop Orenburg and Ural.
He was born on September 15, 1849, into a family of an archpriest in the city of Kazan.
In 1874, he graduated from the Kazan Spiritual Seminary with a degree in Theology.
From December 2, 1874, he was an acolyte at the Embassy church in Vienna.
On June 2, 1876, he became a widower.
In 1880 he returned to Kazan and on November 23, 1881, he joined the Beijing Spiritual Mission.
On January 10, 1882, he received a monastic tonsure, and on January 24th, he was consecrated a hierodeacon, and on January 28th, a hieromonk.
On August 16, 1886, he returned to Russia and was appointed caretaker of Herson Spiritual School.
On October 16, 1887, he was appointed dean of Stavropol Spiritual Seminary, and on October 25th he was elevated to the rank of Archimandrite.
On January 7, 1888, he presented a thesis in Kazan on the history of the Beijing Spiritual Mission, and on February 22nd, he was honored with the magisterial degree in Theology.
On March 11, 1890, he was consecrated Bishop of Novomirgorod, Vicar of Herson Diocese. The rite of consecration was held in Saint Petersburg.
On June 8, 1891, he became Bishop of Alaska and the Aleutian.
On September 7, 1891, he became Bishop of Baltsk, Vicar of Podolie Diocese.
On October 22, 1895, he became Bishop of Orenburg and the Urals.
He reposed in 1896.
He was a writer of spiritual works. Leading an ascetic life, he was also very meek, gentle, and merciful, for which he was dearly loved and respected by the faithful. He was a fruitful writer of numerous compilations with spiritual content; he created a catalogue of Beijing Mission’s library. He wholeheartedly devoted himself to collecting and examining the translation of liturgical books, and when he got familiar with the language, he himself translated the Sunday services of the Octoechos.
