Meeting of the Holy Synod, presided by the Patriarch

HEARD:

The report of Metropolitan Juvenaly of Krutits and Kolomna, Chairman of the Synod Commission on canonization of saints, regarding materials received by the Commission dealing with the glorification of the new-martyrs and confessors of Russia, who suffered in various dioceses of the Russian Orthodox Church, and on materials received by the Commission regarding the veneration in various dioceses of the Russian Orthodox Church of Bishop Antony (Smirnitsky, 1773-1846) of Voronezh and of Bishop John (Maximovich, 1896-1966) of Shanghai and San Francisco.

DECIDED:
  1. To approve the report of Metropolitan Juvenaly.
  2. To include in the Assembly of new-martyrs and confessors of Russia in the XX century, the names of those about whom materials have been submitted:
    By the Moscow Diocese: Priest Mikhail (Vinogradov; 1873 — May 31, 1932), nun Evgenia (Lysova; 1892 — Nov. 17, 1935), nun Magdalina (Zabelina; 1863 — December 8, 1931);
    By the Cheboksaro-Chuvash Diocese: Archpriest Nicholas (Troitsky; 1895 — March, 10, 1945) and Priest Ilya (Izmailov; 1882 — September, 17, 1937).
  3. To send the names of these saints to the Leaders of fraternal Local Orthodox Churches for enrolling them in their calendar of saints.
  4. To include in the agenda of the upcoming Bishops' Council the general Church veneration of the Hierarch Antony of Voronezh (Smirnitsky; 1773-1846) and the hierarch John (Maximovich; 1896-1966), Archbishop of Shanghai and San Francisco.

Considered:

The solution of the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople on the establishment of a diocesan structure within the Chinese Autonomous Orthodox Church.

Background:

On January 9, 2008, the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople again identified boundaries established in 1996 by the Metropolis in Hong Kong, adding to its limits the People's Republic of China and a number of Southeast Asian Nations.

DECIDED:

Adopt the Statement of the Holy Synod on the subject.
